Stelarc

Stelarc’s projects and performances explore alternative anatomical architectures. He has used interactive media, prosthetics, robotics, virtual systems, and the internet to actualise his ideas.
He has performed with a Third Hand, an Extended Arm, a Stomach Sculpture, and 6-legged walking robots. In 1995, for Fractal Flesh, “Telepolis”, his body was remotely choreographed using muscle stimulation. Ping Body (1996) and Parasite (1997) were online performances where the body was animated by internet information and images.
In 2006, an ear was surgically constructed on his arm. In 2016, for the Re-Wired/Re-Mixed performance, he could only see with the eyes of someone in London, could only hear with the ears of someone in NY, but anyone, anywhere could access his right arm and remotely actuate it. StickMan is a minimal but full-body exoskeleton that algorithmically actuates the body for a 5-hour performance. A miniStickMan was engineered for visitors to insert their own choreography into the performance. Commissioned for the 2020 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art, Reclining StickMan is a 9m long, 4m high robot that is algorithmically actuated and can be remotely controlled.
Anthropomorphic Machine (2022) is an 8m high, 7m in diameter interactive installation. A collaboration with LLDS, it was commissioned for the Swarm exhibition at the Science Gallery, Melbourne. With his Sensor Bracelets amplified body signals and 3D printed headset, he has performed at CCBT 2023 in Tokyo and G.Map 2024 in Gwangju.
